Billing Rate Information
Doctors' visits in France are generally much cheaper than in Switzerland. Your health insurance may be recommended that you see a doctor in France. A visit at a general practitioner in France will cost you around 50 EUR vs. about 120-150 CHF in Switzerland. At the Hôpital de la Tour a visit will cost around 300 CHF.

All Swiss residents that have the mandatory Swiss health insurance coverage are charged based on a state-controlled rate called TARMED. This applies to all physicians and hospitals in Switzerland for all interventions that are covered by the basic health insurance system (LAMAL). Consultations are billed based on the amount of time and the type of intervention that is required. The rate is billed in 5 minute intervals at approximately CHF 18.
Europeans that are insured by a national health insurance plan from an EU member state are also eligible to receive this same preferred TARMED rate. This applies to all EU nationals that may be seconded to CERN but paid by their national governments, for example.
On the other hand, people who have private health insurance (for example, the UN or CERN health insurance coverage) may be charged a much higher rate - often double the TARMED rates.
When visiting a doctor in Switzerland, explain that you work at CERN and that you would like to benefit from the TARMED rate. In general, doctors will do this if you ask.
